At least 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
