European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
