'Candy game'
The prosecutor, handling the case, detailed the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.
She said his targets were under-privileged children who were participating in a summer camp which he ran.
The defendant conducted a "treat game" with the youngsters, the prosecutor said, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to ingest treats "as fast as possible".
She stated to the judge the defendant had engaged in this activity with the boys "repeatedly", and minors had earlier experienced illness the following morning.
She explained the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had concerns in summer 2025.
The prosecutor stated further: "In the summer" his stepchild had concerns about what was going on, justifiably.
"They chose" to investigate in the man's possessions."
Mrs Prior KC said materials including infant oil, petroleum jelly and injection devices were discovered, and his family member notified the police about his worries.
She stated Ruben continued to play the "candy game" with six boys that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the next day.
"The police had not gone out by that time," she continued.
The police watchdog, the police conduct office, had stated that it was examining the police response of the incident.
The legal representative said the minors were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities a second time.
