Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
